J.T.Reffel Memorial French Friendship school started with 27 boys and 12 girls in 1940 by J.T.Reffell, tribal chief of the Bassas. It was located at number 1 Guy Street. No age limit was imposed for entry, and children between ages 4 and 14 years were accepted for enrollment. By 1944 the enrollment had soared to 120.
For several years Mrs. Phebean Reffell assumed the role of Proprietress and Head Teacher. After hard and dedicated work to the school she decided to handover the school to her daughters in 1986. Both daughters, Pearl and Daisy, with the same pioneering spirit and dedication of their parents, continued to carry out the role of proprietresses & Head teacher of the school.
In 1989 the school acquired its new name of J.T. Reffell French Friendship Memorial School. The school relocated to the A. J. Momoh Street,Tower hill back of Fire Force, Freetown.
